The Importance of Hiring a Real Writer in the Age of AI
With many industries making cuts to their workforce and relying on AI to replace talented employees, it's normal to feel a bit panicky.
Right across the board, from IT to marketing, people are losing their jobs and being replaced by AI software, rather than a talented individual. I feel like I am seeing this on a daily occurrence.
In some respects, you can't blame cash strapped businesses for making this switch. We live in a very difficult economic climate and the cost of employees is not an easy one for some businesses to cover.
Despite giving an immediate financial respite, those businesses switching to AI will suffer in the long term. Especially if they are replacing their content writers, copywriters and marketing strategists with AI.
AI is brilliant for some things, but it will never come close to replacing a talented writer or marketing professional. It misses the details and doesn't have the human touch we all look for in compelling, captivating storytelling, which essentially keeps businesses running across the world.
In today's blog, I'm going to be talking about the importance of having a real writer in today's AI driven world.
1. Storytelling matters, and humans do it best
If you're looking to tell a brand's story through social media, content or other means, you need a human touch. AI can be useful for research, but it cannot replace the human understanding element that is crucial in good content writing.
In an age where we are bombarded with information, websites and social media, writing matters more than ever to help businesses stand out. Having that original story and hook is vital, and you simply can't replicate the human experience when it comes to writing.
AI will never understand the nuance of emotion, attention and how to achieve that through writing. Yes, it can write, but it can't write to the standard that businesses need to stand out.
2. Nuance is everything, and AI can’t touch this
As someone who has been content writing for nearly six years, I've dabbled in AI to see if it can make life easier. I would never touch it for writing, but in my earlier years, I tried to use it as an extra pair of eyes for editing. A huge part of being a content writer and SEO writing is strict character and word counts.
ChatGPT or other software cannot fathom how to take a sentence and reduce it by 10 characters. The end result is always somehow longer and worse and you spend more time correcting it than if you were to do the work yourself.
It may be good at providing us with information and ideas, but it cannot understand the nuance and mechanics of good writing and how to follow best practice. That is something only a human can learn after many years of experience.
AI also doesn't understand the audience on an individual level. Content has to be tailored and polished to meet an individual's needs. The same blog format, for instance, won't work for all businesses. ChatGPT doesn't know best in this case as it cannot learn from experience in the way that we can.
3. Lost in the detail
Of course AI can write, but it can't write well. So much of the meaning and nuance is lost when you get an automated computer to write for you.
Not only is this less engaging for an online audience as the human element of storytelling is completely taken out, but content just gets lost.
Without unique human experience, emotions and anecdotes in the writing, AI content ends up contributing to the great big mass of content we are now exposed to on a daily basis.
It does the job, sure, but it doesn't do it well. It turns businesses and organisations into machines rather than standing out against the crowd.
So much is lost when you switch to AI writing, rather than writing that comes from a human. Someone with years of experience, stories, emotions, anecdotes and nuanced thought is what makes content worth reading.
4. Laziness never trumps longevity
If you're looking for a quick fix, AI will help you. Of course it can create content quicker than a human, but it's never as good.
Sometimes you might have to turn something around instantly, but it's almost always better to take more time to get the job done better, otherwise you'll just end up having to do the work again.
It's understandable that businesses are getting rid of their copywriters in replacement of AI.
Not only is it cheaper, but it's far quicker to get the job done. But at the end of the day, a business needs to decide between quick fix or longevity. For longevity, you pick the human every time.
Looking for a Content Writer?
I am pleading the case of AI for humanity's sake, but also because we need good writer's now, more than ever.
If you are a business looking to set yourself apart from the rest, or need someone to turn around a piece of content quickly, think about hiring a content writer next time, rather than turning to AI.
Writers especially can tell when something has been written by AI rather than a human and it's not a good look. Using AI signals laziness and a lack of care, which is never good for any business.
If you're looking for a content writer, I can help you. With over six years of experience across e-commerce I know what makes a compelling piece of copy that leaves an impression. It's what I've been doing for half a decade.
